Ola my friend! It’s that time of year where you have to maintain a solid defense for your immune system. The weather is cooler and cold now in many areas of the world. You may notice that people tend to get sick during this time of the year because of the viruses and sickness going around. No worries though, you can easily keep your immune system fortified with this homemade honey garlic cough syrup. It takes less than 5 minutes to make.
Homemade Honey Garlic Cough Syrup Main Ingredients
I was talking to a family friend one day and I remember saying, “I am not sick.” I remember saying that all day because my nose was running earlier but it stopped. Words have power. I knew I was not sick but I wanted to assure her that I wouldn’t pass any bug to her. She immediately and eagerly began sharing this honey garlic cough syrup recipe with me. She said crush some fresh garlic and mix it with raw honey and let it sit out and infuse. That’s it. I was amazed.
- Raw Honey: this ancient beloved sweet substance produced by bees is the rock star of this recipe. It softens the intensity of the garlic in addition to being packed with many awesome benefits.
- Crushed Garlic: this superfood is the superhero of many recipes but especially this one thanks to being loaded with undeniable and faithful health benefits.
How to Make and Hacks
Like my friend instructed me, the best way to make this homemade cough syrup is to crush the garlic into small tiny pieces and put in a container. Add raw honey and mix well. Let this mixture sit out on the counter and infuse overnight.
You can also store in the fridge or the freezer. Instead of a container you can use a ziplock bag or a ice cube tray and freeze for daily use.
You can use minced garlic if you do not have fresh. Do not use the garlic powder because that is too processed for this type of tonic.
How to take
You can take a tablespoon of this homemade honey garlic cough syrup every 4 hours.
The frozen honey garlic cough syrup ice cubes are perfect to pop in hot water or tea of your choice. You can sip on this throughout the day.
My Review
Let’s start with taste. I do not like the taste of this homemade cough syrup LOL. I love garlic. It’s a common root vegetable / herb / spice I use for soups, stir-frys, and all types of dishes. But garlic by itself is too overwhelming for me. The second time I took a teaspoon full, I had to hold my nose and take it otherwise I would be able to swallow it.
The honey barely makes it tolerable. I am so grateful for the honey any time I take this remedy. Adding ginger helps a ton. Just adding the ginger to the tea made the taste a bit more tolerable but chewing the ginger helps the most.
This simple 2-3 ingredient remedy is extremely effective for me. I remember feeling a satisfying boost of energy after about 1 hour of taking this remedy for the first time. I also remember my throat feeling better. It wasn’t sore but felt like something was trying to happen and this simple honey and garlic really prevented whatever that was.
Other Remedies
My family friend also recommended:
